After spinal cord injury, in many cases paralyzed muscles can still be activated with low levels of electrical current. By coordinating the activation of several paralyzed muscles, KeyGrip can offer functional movements like hand grasp. KeyGrip is a simple implant that can be placed in an outpatient procedure. A power supply worn externally on the arm controls how the paralyzed muscles are stimulated for hand grasp. Users can also use the device in exercise mode to strengthen muscles that have weakened after years of paralysis. KeyGrip’s phone app lets users keep track of exercise and functional use throughout the day.
